Contestant of the Week (& Month) for July 26-30, 2021

This week’s Contestant/Zonk Contestants of the Week will be merged w/ Contestant/Zonk Contestants of the Month, and honorable/dishonorable mentions will be skipped.

Matt Amodio is your Contestant of the Week & Month, not only becoming the first contestant going into next week to play under three different hosts but also proving himself worthy among the show’s all-time greats. He has swept the week & is going into the weekend w/ a whopping 8-day total of $291,200, far eclipsing previous regular-play season-leader Brian Chang ($165,904), put together the second highest individual Coryat score of all time ($39,000; $200 off of Ken Jennings’ record), fifth highest two-day combined individual Coryat ($70K; Jul. 29-30), this season’s highest single-day total ($74K) & his buzzer speed has been compared to that of Ken Jennings’, and that’s not all! If he can keep it going then he may just earn a spot in The Chase if he’s interested. Fans on Twitter apparently aren’t happy about this fact, however.

Patrick Pearce is your Zonk Contestant of the Week & Month. Matt Amodio wasn’t the only one to make history on Jeopardy! this week as Patrick Pearce also wrote his name into the history books, though for all the wrong reasons. He was $200 in the red after the Jeopardy! round, but the Double Jeopardy! round was where things really took a turn for the worse… he had more incorrect responses than correct responses (10 R, 11 W), wagered $2,000 from $1,000 in the hole but unfortunately tripled that hole, and he never recovered. The snowball didn’t stop rolling & that eventually ended w/ him ultimately missing Final Jeopardy! and breaking Stephanie Hull’s record for lowest score of all-time with -$7,400, though Joan Kantor from Season 1 w/ -$5,100 would still hold the outright record (-$10,200) taking doubled dollar values into account.

Jeopardy Season 37 Week 45 Stats

We would like to congratulate Matt Amodio for making it to eight days & becoming the first contestant to play under three different hosts, as well as putting up one of the all-time greatest performances on Thursday (incl. second-highest individual Coryat of all time)! And his two-day combined Coryat (Jul 29-30; $70K) is the fifth best of all time (behind James Holzhauer w/ $70K+ 3x & Ken Jennings). If he keeps it up it won’t be long before he could join The Chase as fifth chaser.

Though, it seems very unlikely at this point that we’ll go through either of the remaining two weeks w/out a FJ! Triple Stumper. Not even Matt has been able to break this curse.

Oh, and Matt wasn’t the only one who’s made history on this show this week, if you know what I mean…

Contestant of the Week for July 19-23, 2021

Matt Amodio from Jeopardy! is your Contestant of the Week. Fellow J! champion Josh Saak was originally on track to be this week’s Contestant of the Week going on a 3-day run of $66,405. However, he will instead be an honorable mention, as on his fourth day he went into FJ! second to Matt Amodio (Saak’s $19,800 to Amodio’s $20,200), both men came up w/ the correct answer, and while Saak wagered $5,005 preparing himself for a possible Triple Stumper scenario, Amodio made the daring move to wager EVERYTHING & it paid off for a 1-day total of $40,400, and he hasn’t looked back & is now going into the weekend w/ a 3-day total of $101,400 thanks to similar James Holzhauer-esque FJ! wagers in his subsequent games.

Other honorable mentions: This won’t be an all-Jeopardy! edition COTW post for a third week in a row, as Luis & Natalie are the inaugural champions of Crime Scene Kitchen; 2015 Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions contender Michael Bilow went for the big $210K amount in the Chase & won, and, along w/ his team who were also former J! contestants (Monikka Man in 2016; Andrew Vogel in Kids Week/Back-to-School Week 2005), won the Final Chase vs. Mark “The Beast” Labbett.

This week’s Beat Shazam players, Emma & Jazmin (aspiring doctors in Cullman, AL), Ray & Melvin (Baltimore Ravens cheerleaders) and Thanya & Javonna (fitness moms in Carlsbad), are your Zonk Contestants of the Week because they performed very badly & did not beat Shazam.

Dishonorable mentions: Pete Wisniewski laid a gooseegg before Final Jeopardy!; Julian Villafana on Press Your Luck whammied out of the Bonus Round, being the third contestant this season to do so. Furthermore, the episode as a whole was a mess; Elizabeth Devereaux ran out of time on Wednesday’s FJ! after she began to write “Emperor” when the response only required the name which cost us an aced episode (3-for-3 DDs & FJ); We still can’t catch a break w/ guest hosts stumping the panel in Final at least once.

Jeopardy Season 37 Week 44 Stats

Sigh. We just can’t seem to catch a break w/ those guest hosts & FJ Triple Stumpers even w/ the shorter stints we have now. On the other hand, I can’t wait to see how much further Matt could go.
